Arts in Action

Community art is a positive force for encouraging and sparking social change.  Across the United States, artists, activists, and community organizations regularly collaborate to generate dialogue about issues of oppression, injustice, and social and economic inequality.  In addition, movements for social and political change rely on art, music, theater, and dance to forge a sense of unity, solidarity, and strength.  Other organizations use art to give a voice to immigrants, workers, youth, and other underrepresented groups. This page provides some examples of how community organizations and movements for social change have used art to both transform society and emphasize the dignity and power of their members.
